There are different types of jazz music, each with their own origin and style. Jazz music is distinctly different from any other types of music and can be recognized world wide as having a uniquely American flair to it. Jazz had its beginnings in the United States but is now considered to have a fine mixture of African culture thrown in with it.

There are four distinct parts to jazz music that include rhythm, harmony, melody, and tonal qualities. No matter what type of jazz that you enjoy you’ll be able to find a club that caters to your tastes. There are many experimental jazz venues that are popping up all over the place, including many European cities where all types of music are welcomed and appreciated.

One jazz style is called the Work Song. It is upbeat and rhythmically fast because it was used to make the work day go by faster. The Work Song is repeated over and over and isn’t considered a modern form. This jazz tends to be associated with African American music. It’s probably the rhythmic beat that makes it the least popular jazz style today.

New Orleans Jazz is another style that had its beginnings in the early 1890’s American history. It began marching songs and gospel songs used in brass band performances. One of the foremost leaders in this style is the famous bandleader, William Basie, otherwise known for his band, the Count Basie Orchestra. This style of jazz is still popular today.

The Chicago Style of jazz started in the late 1917’s. Chicago, known as one of the premiere jazz locations in the country, drew many musicians from southern states as the prohibition forced people to move north looking for new jobs and places where they could play this new type of jazz. During this period, piano was added to the background of jazz music, creating an entirely new sound known as Chicago Style jazz.

World War II came and went transforming jazz yet again. This era is when Bebop was born. Bebop fuses fast tempo with changing rhythmic patterns and makes a softer, lighter sound. Bebop will often focus on a solo performer instead of the whole band.

As you can see, jazz is always changing, yet retains part of its original formation at it roots. Jazz is a musical style that changes with the times and the various outlooks of its listeners. One reason that jazz remains popular and alive is its ability to adapt to the world it lives in.

In musical parlance tuning refers to two types of tuning methods. One is the tuning practice, which is the applying procedures of tuning an instrument, its gear or the voice. The other one is the tuning of the music systems.

The question that comes to the mind is why do we need tuning of music gear? Tuning is a process through which certain pitches are built up in relation with each other. The matching is done in tandem. For certain times they cross each other and at other times they complement the other one, at periodic intervals. When a pitch is too high or near too inaudible with respect to the others, we call it out of tune.

Out of tune is also called when the pitch does not match a standard, such as a concert A 440. For a wind musical gear like pipe, flute or any bass instruments, modifying the length or width can adjust the pitch.

Guitar is a string instrument. Tuning of music gear like guitars are also different. So, the tuning done to adjust the pitch is also different. There are adjustable pegs on the head of the guitar. Turning them will increase or decrease the tension of the strings, which in turn will change the tuning. This holds true for, almost, all of the string instruments and the gear.

Tuning the music gear is done with voice also. This process is known as matching pitch. This is considered to be one of the basics of the ear tunings.

Along with the harmonic gear, there are some inharmonic instruments also. The type with which the tuning is applied also determines the complexity. A brass instrument like bell is an intricate instrument to tune.

A simple way of tuning the music gear is to start sounding the two pitches and then tinkering with the one to match with the other one. For this purpose a tuning fork is used as a reference device. There are electronic tuning devices also which help in deciding the right tune for the gear.

Accuracy of the tuning of the music gear is sometimes measured by the interference beats. When the two working pitches are going on side by side and moving towards a harmonic relationship the frequency of the beating is decreased. The apt way to tune an octave or unison is to lessen the beating frequency till it cannot be noticed. The type of tuning system determines in case of other intervals.

In tuning the music gears for strings, which are not tuned to unison, harmonics can be used.

Only one pitch is used as a reference pitch to tune a gear or instrument. For a string instrument only one string is tuned first, then it becomes the reference pitch to tune the others. In case of guitar, the lowest string is tuned to E; the successive ones are done next.

In the 16th century, the Italian musicians first used unconventional tunings or scordatura. The main uses were to facilitate difficult passages in tuning of gear, reinforce tonalities by using the open strings, and also extending the range of the instruments.

There are times when a musical instrument or gear is intentionally pitched lower during tuning. This process of tuning the music gears is called down tuned.

When I first started studying the history of music, I did not know what I was getting into. I had a notion that music history was somewhat of a trivial pursuit…

Honestly, I only followed my history of classical music course because I needed the credits. I am sure some of you out there can relate to that. I did not know how fully interesting music history could be. You see, in our culture many of us do not really study to comprehend music. For much of the world, music is a language, but for us it is a thing that we consumed passively.

When I started to study about the history of Western music, however, it changed all that for me. I have had some experience using musical instruments, but I have never mastered one enough to really comprehend what music is all about. This class showed me.

When a lot of us think about the history of music, it means the history of rock music. We presume that the history is plain because the music is plain. In fact, neither is the case. The history of music, whether you’re talking about classical music, rock music, jazz music, or any other kind, is always complex. New chord structures are set up carrying with them new forms of understanding humanity. New rhythmic patterns are established, carrying with them new methods of understanding history. And music shows all of it.

History of music nowadays is even more interesting. Even when the class was ended, I could not stop learning about the history of music. It had stimulated my appetite, and I wanted more. I acquired all the music history volumes that I could discover. I even started to examine forms of music that had not interested me before in the hopes of improving my musical knowledge further. When I was in school studying toward a very different subject - a degree in engineering - I had thought about giving it up and going back to obtain a degree in musicology. That is how much I am fascinated by the subject.

If you have never taken a course in the history of music, you don’t know what you are missing out on. You do not miss what you don’t know about in a way but then again… Believe me the CDs will never sound the same to you again. Actually not only the Cds but any type of media you are or will be using to play your favorite music. The whole thing will seem much more rich, much more luminous, and much more important. A new song can reflect a new way of being, and a new way of imagining existence in the world. This is what learning about the history of music means to many of us. Just try it and you will see.

Listening to music now has a whole new meaning. You can imagine all the different types of musical patterns there are in the world. It make your musical mind really expand.

That’s music to my ear is a common phrase used to express a person’s emotional response to how a particular tune can make them feel. Some people listen to music all the time. Some study the art of playing an instrument. It’s therapeutic; it’s enriching; it’s a way of creating moods in any environmental setting. If you are interested in music for more than the pure enjoyment people get out of listening to it, then learning about music theory is an ideal mode for you.

Music theory can be an important attribute in a person’s life, for many reasons. People often ask, “Is music theory necessary?” “Why do we need it?”

First of all, even though you don’t have to understand how to read sheet music to perform as a musician, you will need an understanding of music theory. It opens so many other doors for you in the world of music. Music theory will not show you how to understand music, but with music theory you will be able to communicate musical ideas, explore music in whole new ways, and redefine the tremendous scope that entails the magical world of music.

Music theory allows you to voice your opinion with others in the field, expand your musical horizon. Give a little input to a fellow musician and you’ll get something in return.

Notations And Communicating With Other Musicians

Music lovers all develop a keen sense of awareness, musically speaking. Sometimes, musicians explain that if they study music theory, then it’ll stunt their creativity. Wrong! The world’s greatest composers were all masters of music theory: Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, J.S. Bach. These experts composed a keen understanding of the theoretical concepts. Years were spent studying the concept, down to some of the smallest details.

Music can be played by ear, picking out tunes without the aid of written music. Your ears can be your guide. The reason this is brought to light is that some musicians with strong theoretical training often disregard the art of playing by ear.

Think of playing music by ear this way: We’re all born as non-verbal creations. Communication begins with crying, making sounds, displaying body language. Parents quickly become experts on baby talk. It’s an innate sense. Over time, language develops by mimicking sounds. Toddlers don’t learn nouns and verbs; they learn to speak by example. Music can be the same way. Hence, the reason so many people pay top dollar for live performances. It’s invigorating, magical.

Understanding Harmony And Chord Progression

Chord progression and harmony, two features of music theory, help broaden any musician, regardless of their genre of study. Chord progression is a series of chords that are used to harmonize music. All compositions use chord progression. Those that improvise - which, as already mentioned, adds charm and magic to the environment of music - invent brand new melodies that blend in with an existing chord. It’s a musical transition, something that must be practiced, repeatedly. The great composers and musicians develop chord progressions and transitions until it becomes natural, a second-natured maneuver.

If a musician improvises in a more interconnected manner, these new melodies show the musician the progression as one whole unit, and not a series of bumpy transitions. The more practice that goes into this aspect of music learning theory, the more interesting substitutions they will develop along the way. Once the concept of chord progression and its structure is understood, it will be easier to remember. Jazz musicians, therefore, show a keen interest in the study and analysis of chord progression.

The study of music theory will show musicians and musical scholars that the objective, initially, is not to consider an entire composition in one sitting. Instead, musicians, students and teachers alike, view a chord progression in segments, or units. These units correspond to musical sections known as stanzas.

A stanza is the complete statement and development of a single musical idea. It’s a fairly simple act of dividing pieces into small manageable sections, with the melody itself forming, or suggesting the boundaries for sound.

Tonality, another element of chord progression, means different things to different people. Some would consider it to be this: any piece of music with a well-defined key center. Others envision any music that uses the conventional chords as tonal.

Music without the use of chords in a functional manner to reinforce a tonal center is not tonal. It is referred to as non-tonal music. The names of these styles are not always agreed upon between musical connoisseurs. But expressing difference is one key element that makes music such a beautiful art form, with countless possibilities.

So, if you are considering studying music, be it to play an instrument, teach music, or simply hone in on personal curiosity, learning music theory is a must for you.

Music tames the savage beast they say, and perhaps the creation of music in our species tamed us into a more, but not totally, civilized manner. The origin of music is not known exactly, it has its origins before pre-history, through humans using patterns, repetition and tonality to produce naturally occurring sounds, possibly as a way to lure animals into a hunt.

Essentially, the first musical instrument was the human voice because it can produce a wide range of sounds from singing and humming to whistling and clicking. If the hyoid bone, which is responsible for speech, is the judge of the earliest music, then it would date to 60,000 years old at least, beating the oldest bone flute by 10,000 years.

Clapping was probably the first type of instrument used, through hitting one’s hands together, or using stones to create rhythm. When humans first began using stone tools, the sound of pounding seed and roots into meal was probably the first type of rhythm ever created by early humans.

The ‘Neanderthal flute’, which is a disputed find, dates to 43,000 years old. It is a hollowed out femur of a cave bear, containing holes like a flute. The earliest confirmed bone pipe dates to 36,000 years ago.

The harp, a complicated musical device, dates to 5,000 years ago based on statues found in Crete, as well as the double flute. In regards to song, this dates to 3,400 years ago, written in Hurrian, consisting of two melodic lines that utilizes major and minor thirds, while some interpretations of the music states it is monophonic. The Delphic Hymn is the earliest surviving example of notated music in the world.

Clearly, as can be seen from the archeological evidence, music is something that has evolved with our species over the past 60,000 years or so. It has been a companion for all of us, from the lonely hunter waiting for his prey while he hunts an animal, to large groups of people whose prayers become a form of song to their gods.

It is something which sets our species apart from others on this planet, and while birds have their song, humans have one completely different, that is varied and complex. Music is part of our lifeblood and what gives hope to our species as we venture into the unknown of the future. A world without music is a world where the vestiges of civilized humanity disappear.

Music and instruments have progressed over time. With the invention of a twelve tone scale, western music has become the prominent music form. With the creation of the twelve tone scale, new instruments were created. These instruments were able to play these scales and even more important, were able to play with one another. This lead to the creation of ensembles and written music. The next greatest invention , the printing press, allowed music to be shared worldwide.

Today, we still use the basic instruments such as the harp and flute, except that the are tunable and can play a wider range of notes and music. Music continues to tame the savage breast even today.
For instance, if you are thinking of creating Personalized music for children, the only thing that you will have to do is to find the proper program that is able to do the job. All the software tools are usually available at quite low prices and they are also likely to come along with added features and even better quality. The audio production software can be regarded as a genuine example because every personal computer is likely to have the necessary features in order to edit and record digital music. Recently, the exact same trend has developed into something else, namely the desktop music production.

Therefore, you can have your own Personalized Music by using your existing computer together with the affordable software. No musical knowledge is needed and every video producer can create the necessary custom music in order to suit his projects. There are plenty of options when it comes to editing and recording music; these options are to be used in order to create your own custom music that will accompany every project you are thinking of. One reason for creating the custom music resides in the fact that you can actually decide the song length in order to suit your project levels. You can also control the content of the music and this control is to be provided; the control is to be connected with copyright or stylistic reasons. The music creation software is to be used in order to create Personalized music for children too because the kids will be delighted to hear their own names in the middle of a song. You can do this by using the software in order to introduce the child’s name in the chosen song.

The software should be let to do its job by itself because the results are likely to be satisfying enough; check-box approaches will be offered by the software. The software will also contain all the pre-defined edit points that will divide the entire song into timed segments that are perfect for being recorded or edited. You may select the favorite music from a given list and you will have to tell the software how long it is going to last. You will have to inform the software about the exact number of seconds and minutes that are implied by every particular song; the software will be thus able to generate the final and finished product. The edit list is always to be taken into account when it comes to creating the Personalized Music.

The edit list is the main tool that is used by the software in order to create the requested music; based on this list, the software will be able to build its own version of the requested song by using the criteria you have given to it. If you are not pleased with the way your software is doing its job when it comes to recording or editing music, you may redo the entire process in order to obtain the desirable result. You may also change some of the initial options in order to reconstruct the entire editing process. But you have to be perfectly aware that everything you are likely to gain when it comes to convenience and speed is likely to be offset by a certain lack of control over the software steps. But the results are likely to be consistently good; every software feature may help you create custom music quite fast because the automatic generation is to be used in this case.

There are also some constraints that are affecting the normal use of such software; for instance, every user should be aware of the inherent difficulties because no protection scheme is likely to last forever. Any time content can be regarded as valuable enough; therefore, you should not feel motivated to find various ways in order to break all the protection mechanisms that were created in order to secure the digital music. Actually, almost every protection mechanism is subject to defeat; so, the most plausible countermeasure is the one that consists in the constant change of the designed protection.

The protection should be renewable; it has to be easily changed in order to allow the user to upgrade the old versions of protection schemes with the latest ones. This solution is to be considered because it can protect the content from various points forward and it can also limit the profits that are made from regular piracy. The protection will thus be kept; the protection scheme will be transformed into a sort of moving target that can be difficult to trace down by the people who are interested in breaking it.

Born on the 16th December 1770 at Bonn, Beethoven is considered to be a brilliant composer who, through his entire creation, fully contributed to the development of the universal music and the improvement of genres and musical forms.

Origins and background

His father and grandfather were musicians of the court in Bonn and little Ludwig, whose talent came to light since he was 4, was destined to the same career. He studied with different teachers the piano, organ, violin and viola, excelling at playing the first two.

At the age of 11 he became the pupil of the composer Christian Gotthof Neefe, organist and band master of the court, who not only broadened his musical background, but also encouraged him to compose. Though he was still a child, he soon became Neefe’s assistant at the organ, as well as in the Elector’s personal theatre orchestra and of some other families, being later hired as a band master.

With the help of the Elector and some other noble families from Bonn he was sent to study in Vienna where he had as teachers Haydn, Albrechtsberger, Schenk and Salieri. Here, he was firstly remarked as a skilled pianist, gifted with an unusual expressive power, which allowed him to present his own creations.

Character and personality

His artistic personality was doubled by a passionate and unflinching temper which didn’t allow him to be intimidated or humiliated. Though he was supported by a series of aristocrats, he didn’t service anyone, defending ceaselessly his position as an independent professional musician. He is the first great example of this in the history of music, but the conditions of the feudal settlements were to impede him in finding the material stability and peace of mind to freely compose, until the end of his life.

Contemporaneous with the French Revolution from 1789 and the national independence current, which tormented the European peoples in this period, he understood the time’s call and expressed the new ideas of freedom, equality and fraternity, becoming a fighter through art, to accomplish humanity’s most noble aspirations.

Having appeared in the Viennese Classicism’s magnificent period, represented by Haydn and Mozart, he determinedly took over the achievements since, creatively developing them, widening the frame of the classic forms, using new templates, more suitable to the contemporary way of thinking and feeling, bringing in music the force of an impetuous dynamism which passionately revealed the dramas of the human existence. Also, through his language and through considerably increasing the number of the orchestra’s instruments he contributed to the extraction of the music out of the saloons’ privacy.

Musical Creation

According to Harold Schonberg, Beethoven’s creation can be divided in three periods of time:

A first period including approximately twenty works is marked by the appeal to old forms, but prefigures the explosive force to come, here, eloquent examples being the minuet from the 1st Symphony, which prepares the future scherzos or slow motion from the Sonata for piano opera 10 no. 3, with a writing characterized by a direct affective involvement, suggesting an almost romantic tune.

The second period begins with the 3rd Symphony when Beethoven appears as an expert of form, who establishes his own rules, the form of sonata being the one that was to determine the creative evolution of the composer.

The third period includes the last five chords quartets, the piano sonatas “Diabelli Variations”, “Missa Solemnis” and the 9th Symphony when music is written not to be to someone’s liking, but to justify his artistic and intellectual existence, appealing to concepts and symbols.

Beethoven’s Legacy

Through his entire attitude towards music it is natural that he gave a direct programmatic significance to some of his works, among which the most important are: The 3rd Symphony in C major op. “Eroica”, The 5th Symphony in A minor op. 67, The 6th Symphony in D major op.68 “Pastorala”, The 9th Symphony with choir and vocalists in B minor op. 125, the overtures “Coriolan”, “Egmont” and “Leonora”.

His creation also covers: the opera “Fidelio”, the ballet “Prometheus’ Beings”, the scene music for the drama “Egmont” by Goethe, “King Stephen” and “Athena’s Ruins” by Kotzebue, vocal-symphonic works like the oratorio “Jesus on the Olive Mountain”, “Fantasia for Piano, Choir and Orchestra”, “Missa solemnis”, concert works (a concert for violin, two romances for violin, five concerts for piano, treble concert for piano viola and cello), various vocal parts accompanied by orchestra, fanfare music, works for various instrumental room formations (from trio to octet, where the chords quartets are an important stage in this type’s literature), a great number of instrumental compositions among which there are 10 sonatas for violin and piano, 4 sonatas for cello and piano, a sonata for horn and piano, 32 sonatas for piano (The Sonata in A major op. 53 “Waldstein”, The Sonata in D minor op.57 “Appassionata”)etc.

His creation seems even more impressive considering that this genius was struck by deafness since he was 29, affection which became total after approximately a decade, stopping him from singing in public. The pains caused by this illness and the multiple sentimental and family disappointments determined him to gradually isolate from the world but didn’t stop him from becoming one of the most loved figures in the history of music.

The difference between Beethoven and other great composers who preceded him is that he considered himself an artist and stood up to defend his rights. He was an artist, a creator and that is why he considered himself superior to kings and aristocrats.
